Lavalier microphones
Lavalier microphones are condenser microphones, the main feature of which is the elimination of extraneous noise in the process of sound recording. Lavalier microphones are clip-on to clothing, so they are most often used for interviewing. But this doesn’t mean that they cannot be used for any purpose, like a regular microphone.
In addition to quality, lavalier microphones differ in their connection.
Lavalier microphone connection types:
Lavalier microphone with PL 3.5mm mono connection
This microphone is used to connect to cameras and some other devices. On its connector, you can see one black notch, which indicates a mono type.
Lavalier microphone with PL 3.5mm stereo connection
This stereo connection is used to connect a lavalier microphone to older desktop and laptop computers with a separate microphone input, as well as cameras and other devices that have a stereo input with two black notches. To connect this microphone to modern computers, tablets and mobile phones, a special splitter adapter is used, which divides the input of modern devices into a microphone and a headphone.
Lavalier microphone with PL 3.5mm TRRS connection
This lavalier microphone features a TRRS input via a PL3.5mm connector with three black notches. This microphone is used with all modern recording devices. To use it with devices that require a microphone with a standard stereo connector, a special Y adapter-splitter is used that converts the TRRS connector to a stereo PL3.5mm.
USB lavalier microphone
This lavalier microphone can be connected to any computer and tablet with USB input.
Lavalier microphone with USB Type-C connection
This lavalier microphone can be connected to any computer and mobile device with USB Type-C input.
Wireless lavalier microphone
This is a radio system that comes with a transmitter that connects to the microphone itself and a receiver that connects to any device with a microphone input PL3.5 mm stereo, or TRRS stereo. These devices include computers, tablets, mobile phones, cameras and karaoke systems. In addition, there are transmitters that can connect to Type-C inputs in modern mobile devices and Lightning in Apple devices.
Since lavalier microphones are mostly condenser microphones, they require additional phantom power from 1.5 to 12 volts, and in rare cases, 48 volts to operate. Lavalier microphones receive this power from additional batteries, or directly from the input of the connected device.
